O Come, O Come, Emmanuel

Wolf Paul, 2020-11-30

At the beginning of this year’s Advent season here is a classic Advent hymn, performed by musicians from Sovereign Grace Music. Somehow these classic hymns appeal to me more than most contemporary worship choruses.

1) O come, O come, Emmanuel
And ransom captive Israel
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.
1) O komm, o komm, Emmanuel,
mach frei Dein armes Israel!
In Angst und Elend liegen wir
und seufzen weinend nur nach dir
Freu dich, freu dich, o Israel,
bald kommt, bald kommt, Emmanuel.
2) O come, Thou, Dayspring from on high
And cause Thy light on us to rise
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night
And death’s dark shadow put to flight
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel
2) O komm, o komm, Emmanuel,
mach frei Dein armes Israel!
Mit Jesses neuem Herrscherstab
treib weit von uns die Feinde ab.
Freu dich, freu dich, o Israel,
bald kommt, bald kommt, Emmanuel.
3) O come, O come, true prophet of the Lord
And turn the key to heaven’s door
Be Thou our comforter and guide
And lead us to the Father’s side
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel

Shall by His word our darkness dispel.
3) O komm, o komm, Emmanuel,
mach frei Dein armes Israel!
Geh auf, o Sonn, mit deiner Pracht,
zerstreu die Nebel und die Nacht.
Freu dich, freu dich, o Israel,
bald kommt, bald kommt, Emmanuel.
4) O come, our great High Priest, and intercede
Thy sacrifice, our only plea
The judgment we no longer fear
Thy precious blood has brought us near
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Has banished every fear of hell
4) O komm, o komm, Emmanuel,
mach frei Dein armes Israel!
Mit Davids Schlüssel niedersteig
schließauf, schließ auf das Himmelreich
Freu dich, freu dich, o Israel,
bald kommt, bald kommt, Emmanuel.

5) O Come, Thou King of nations bring
An end to all our suffering
Bid every pain and sorrow cease
And reign now as our Prince of Peace
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come again with us to dwell

5) O komm, o komm, Emmanuel,
mach frei Dein armes Israel!
Komm, starker Gott, Gott Sabaoth,
Mach frei dein Volk aus aller Not!
Freu dich, freu dich, o Israel,
Freu dich, freu dich, o Israel,
Freu dich, freu dich, o Israel,
bald kommt, bald kommt Emmanuel.

Der englische Text ist von Sovereign Grace Music adaptiert, der deutsche Text ist der traditionelle Text, deshalb sind die Strophen leicht unterschiedlich.

The English lyrics have been slightly adapted by Sovereign Grace Music, while the German lyrics are the traditional version. Hence the slight differences.
