Die Kultur-Banausen der türkis-grünen Kolation haben beschlossen, die älteste noch bestehende Tageszeitung der Welt einzustellen, und damit bewiesen, daß die ÖVP auch nach Kurz noch türkis unterwegs ist, statt zu ihren schwarzen (christlich-sozialen) Wurzeln zurüchgekehrt zu sein:

Oktober 2022, hat der Eigentümervertreter in Form der türkis-grünen Bundesregierung das Ende der “Wiener Zeitung” in ihrer bestehenden Form als unbestechliche, unabhängige Qualitätstageszeitung verfügt. American Evangelicals: Heretics or just confused?

The recent “State of Theology” survey conducted by Lifeway Research on behalf of Ligonier Ministries has yielded some strange results about the beliefs of a large percentage of American Evangelicals.

Of course the definition of “Evangelical” has become so broad in the US as to be almost meaningless, as far as theology or religious belief is concerned, so the survey tried to narrow its focus on those who agree to these four statements:[1]

  • The Bible is the highest authority for what I believe.
  • It is very important for me personally to encourage non-Christians to trust Jesus Christ as their Savior.
  • Jesus Christ’s death on the cross is the only sacrifice that could remove the penalty of my sin.
  • Only those who trust in Jesus Christ alone as their Savior receive God’s free gift of eternal salvation.

The good news is that of the people who are considered Evangelical by these criteria more than 90 percent agree that

  • God is perfect;
  • God exists in three persons;
  • Jesus’ bodily resurrection is real;
  • People are made righteous not through works but through faith in Jesus.

However, of the Evangelicals thus defined, 

  • 26% agree that “the Bible, like all sacred writings, contains helpful accounts of ancient myths but is not literally true”;
  • 56% agree that “God accepts the worship of all religions, including Christianity, Judaism and Islam”;
  • 73 % agree that “Jesus is the first and greatest being created by God”;
  • 43% agree that “Jesus was a great teacher, but he was not God” and
  • 60% agree that “The Holy Spirit is a force but is not a personal being.”

Apart from the fact that some of these beliefs are remniscent of some classic heresies which the church has rejected throughout church history[2] these results indicate quite a bit of confusion and lack of logical thinking on the part of these Evangelical respondents:

  • How can one reconcile the belief that the Bible is merely a collection of helpful accounts of ancient myths with the belief that the Bible is the highest authority for what to believe?[3]
  • How can one believe that God exists in three persons while simultaneously believing that Jesus is a created being[4], a great teacher but not God[5] , and that the Holy Spirit is an impersonal force rather than a person? Who then are the three persons in whom God exists? Mary, Joseph, and Jesus?[6] Papa, Jesus, and Sarayu?[7]
  • How can one say on the one hand that God accepts the worship of all religions, and on the other that only those who believe in Jesus are saved, being made righteous through faith in Jesus? Does it make sense to say that God accepts the worship of, say, Muslims, but nevertheless sends them to hell? If not, in what sense does God accept the worship of all religions?

Add to this the apparent fact that even Evangelicals trained in theology and whose beliefs are more orthodox and logically consistent than all of this [8] seem to prioritize a person’s political stance as expressed by who they vote for over that person’s faith and beliefs, and that generally, in the United States, the term “Evangelical” has come to denote a political affiliation (and an increasingly whacky one) rather than adherence to specific religious or theological beliefs.

As a European who, having converted from nominal Catholicism, was largely taught and socialialized as an Evangelical  by American Evangelical missionaries, I find this distressing. Knowing how extensive American Evangelicals’ influence is in Europe as well as other parts of the world, I wonder what the state of theological belief is in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, or South America, and whether American Evangelical missionaries are importing American partisan politics into the churches they plant and the ministries they establish and assist.

Ein Testosteron-getriebener Liebesbeweis?

 Elfriede Hammerl, mit der ich nicht immer einer Meinung bin, deren Artikel im profil mich aber immer wieder zum Nachdenken bringen, erzählt im profil-Podcast eine Geschichte, die, gelinde gesagt, ein Armutszeugnis für unsere Gesetzeshüter ist:

Eine 16-jährigen Schülerin geht mit einer Freundin zur Polizei, um auf Rat einer Lehrerin einen Vergewaltigungsversuch durch einen 20-jährigen Bekannten anzuzeigen, und wird dort auf demütigende Weise „abgewimmelt.“

Es fängt an mit der Begrüßung durch einen Polizisten: „Na, seid’s ihr auch da, weil euch jemand aufs Popscherl geklopft hat?“

Sie bittet darum, mit einer Polizistin zu sprechen, aber auch dieses Gespräch verläuft äußerst unbefriedigend.

„Wieviel dumpfe, sexistiscche Idiotie hat sich in Köpfen abgelagert, auch in denen von Frauen, wenn eine Polizeibeamtin einen Vergewaltigungsversuch als Ausdruck verliebten Werbens deklariert, und einen hohen Testosteronspiegel als Entschuldigung für überhaupt alles,“ fragt Frau Hammerl, völlig zurecht.

Daß das Vertrauen der Schülerin (und auch der Lehrerin) in die Polizei erschüttert oder sogar völlig zerstört ist, versteht sich von selbst.

Wir leben in einer sehr widersprüchlichen Welt:

Einerseits wurde mir vor Jahren als Vater einer Teenage-Tochter von naïv-idealistischen Feministinnen gesagt, daß ich meiner Tochter nicht sagen darf, nächtens nicht leicht bekleidet in bestimmten Gegenden unserer Stadt herumzulaufen. Warum? Weil ich dadurch Gewalt- und Mißbrauchstäter „ermächtigen“ würde, und weil das meiner Tochter die Schuld an eventuellen Übergriffen geben würde. Vielmehr müsse man daran arbeiten, daß Männer lernen, sich zu beherrschen und schöne Frauen zu bewundern, ohne an Sex zu denken; und freizügige Kleidung habe ohnehin nichts damit zu tun.

Dabei ignorieren diese naïven Idealisten ein paar Fakten:

  • Meine Warnung an meine Tochter betraf Zufallsbegegnungen mit Unbekannten, die in dieser Situation sicher nichts lernen wollen und werden;
  • Wer behauptet, daß freizügige Kleidung nichts mit sexuell motivierter Gewalt durch Männer zu tun hat, hat keine Ahnung vom männlichen Sexualtrieb;
  • Und auch die Vorstellung, daß Männer schöne Frauen bewundern können ohne an Sex zu denken, zeugt von großer Ignoranz. Natürlich verwerfen und unterdrücken die meisten Männer solche Gedanken oder beschränken sich auf anzügliche Blicke oder Pfiffe.

Andererseits stehen offenbar manche Polizisten und Polizistinnen (und nicht nur sie) auf dem Standpunkt, daß sexuelle Belästigung und sogar (versuchte) Vergewaltigung im Bekanntenkreis, durch scheinbar vertrauenswürdige Personen, nicht mehr ist, als ein ungeschickter und Testosteron-getriebener Liebesbeweis, und daß sich die Frauen doch bitte nicht so anstellen mögen.

Das zerstört nicht nur das Vertrauen betroffener Frauen in die Polizei und den Rechtsstaat insgesamt; sondern es zerstört auch mein Vertrauen, daß die Polizei auf sexuelle Gewalt bei Zufallsbegegnungen im öffentlichen Raum angemessen reagieren würde, statt zu sagen, „Na, hättest Dich halt anders angezogen.“

Das, und nicht meine Warnungen an meine Tochter, „ermächtigt“ Männer, die ihren Sexualtrieb nicht unter Kontrolle haben und die Mädchen und Frauen für Freiwild halten.

Und es macht meine Warnung an meine Tochter umso notwendiger, für alle Frauen. Und diese Warnung ermächtigt und entschuldigt nichts; weist auch den Frauen keine Schuld zu; sondern nimmt zur Kenntnis, daß wir in einer verdorbenen (oder, wie die Bibel sagt, sündigen) Gesellschaft leben.

BPW 2022: Enttäuschende Kandidatenliste

Am 9. Oktober wird der Bundespräsident, das Staatsoberhaupt der Republik Österreich, gewählt und obwohl der Inhaber diesen Amtes lediglich symbolische Macht (und eventuell moralischen Einfluß) hat, bin ich von der Kandidatenliste für diese Wahl ziemlich enttäuscht.

Amtsinhaber Alexander van der Bellen (AvdB) war, obwohl mir persönlich sympathisch, vor allem wegen seiner Mitgliedschaft und Funktion bei den Grünen[1], 2016 nicht mein Wunschkandidat.

Trotzdem habe ich ihn vor sechs Jahren gewählt, weil von Anfang an klar war, daß nur AvdB und Norbert Hofer von der FPÖ eine Chance hatten, gewählt zu werden, und ich AvdB für das kleinere Übel hielt, weil für mich die FPÖ “außerhalb des Verfassungsbogens“[2] steht.

Ich werde AvdB diesmal wieder wählen, weil er sein Amt bisher fair und mit Augenmaß ausgeübt hat, und die anderen Kandidaten für mich aus einem oder nehreren Gründen unwählbar sind:

  • Walter Rosenkranz und Gerald Grosz sind bzw waren brave Parteisoldaten der Kickl-FPÖ bzw. des Haider-BZÖ, beides Parteien, die für mich absolut unwählbar sind;
  • Tassilo Wallentin ist durch antisemitische und misogynistische Aussagen aufgefallen sowie als Strafverteidiger durch skurrile Rechtsargumente, bei denen es mir die Haare aufstellt;
  • Heinrich Staudinger (den ich bisher für einen vernünftigen Menschen gehalten habe) sagt, er hält sich nur an Gesetze, die er persönlich für sinvoll hält;
  • Michael Brunner ist ein Verschwörungstheoretiker, dessen politisches Programm sich im wesentlichen auf den Widerstand gegen Anti-Covid-Maßnahmen beschränkt; und
  • Dominik Wlazny alias Marco Pogo disqualifiziert sich schon allein durch den Namen seiner Partei, der einen Mangel an Respekt gegenüber den Institutionen der Republik ausdrückt – ich mag Kabarettisten und Clowns, aber nicht im höchsten Amt des Staates[3].

Dies sind natürlich alles nur meine persönlichen Einschätzungen und Wahrnehmungen, und auch nicht als moralische Verurteilungen zu verstehen; ich respektiere durchaus das Recht der Kandidaten, ihre Überzeugungen zu haben und zu vertreten, oder bestimmten Parteien anzugehören; aber genauso habe ich das Recht, sie aufgrund ihrer Überzeugungen oder Parteizugehörigkeit zu wählen oder eben nicht zu wählen, und auch zu sagen, was ich von ihren Überzeugungen und Parteien halte.

Wandel, Zerfall in allem sehen wir

Diese Gedanken von Chad Bird zu zwei Zeilen aus dem Lied Bleib bei mir, Herr haben mich so angesprochen, daß ich ihn um Erlaubnis gebeten habe, sie zu übersetzen.

Rasch wie ein Tag verrinnt des Lebens Zeit,
die ird’sche Freud und jede Herrlichkeit.
Wandel, Zerfall in Allem sehen wir;
Herr, der Du ewig bleibst, bleib auch bei mir!

„Wandel, Zerfall in Allem sehen wir“ – Wir singen dies, wir leben es, und oft genug bluten und weinen wir es auch.

  • Familien zerfallen, Ehen zerbrechen, unsere Hoffnungen für eine schöne Zukunft werden durch Katastrophen überschattet.
  • Menschen, denen wir glaubten, vertrauen zu können, fallen uns in den Rücken.
  • Die Preise steigen während die Löhne sinken, wir haben immer mehr Stress und können immer weniger schlafen..
  • Kirchengemeinden werden aufgelassen, Pastoren sind verzweifelt, und unser ohnehin schwache Glaube kämpft ums Überleben

In unserer Welt, voll von Metastasen des Bösen, der Ungerechtigkeit und Bosheit, sind wir einer endlosen Liste von Wandel und Zerfall ausgesetzt, um uns herum, aber auch in uns selbst.

Also rufen wir, „Herr, der Du ewig bleibst, bleib auch bei mir!“ Und er bleibt. So nah wie die Nässe unserer Tränen. So nah wie das Blut in unseren Herzen. Gott mit uns, in uns, über uns, unter uns, als unser Bruder, Jesus. Er hält uns, bis wir zum Zittern aufhören. Er heilt uns, bis der Schmerz nachläßt. Er liebt uns, bis die Tränen trocknen.

Er ist der Gott, der uns nie verläßt. Wie könnte er auch? Wir sind ihm mehr wert als sein eigenes Leben. Das Kreuz posaunt diese unabänderliche Wahrheit hinaus: Jesus ist lieber gestorben, als uns, die Seinen, zu verlieren.

Change And Decay In All Around I See

Chad Bird’s thoughts on the second verse of the hymn Abide With Me so resonated with me that I asked his permission to repost them here:

Swift to its close ebbs out life’s little day;
Earth’s joys grow dim, its glories pass away.
Change and decay in all around I see:
O Thou who changest not, abide with me.

“Change and decay in all around I see.” We sing this, we live it, and often we bleed and weep it.

  • Families crumble, marriages decay, hopes of a bright future are eclipsed by disaster.
  • People we thought we could trust stab us in the back.
  • Bills rise while paychecks fall, stress skyrockets, and sleep evades us.
  • Churches close, pastors weep in the dark, and our gasping faith struggles to survive.

In our world, metastasized with evil and injustice and malice, there is no end to the list of change and decay all around us—and within us.

So we cry, “O Thou who changest not, abide with me.” And he does. As close as the wetness of our tears. As near as the blood in our hearts. God with us, in us, above us, below us, as our brother, Jesus. He will hold us till the trembling stops. Heal us till the pain subsides. Love us till the tears dry.

He is the God who will never walk away. How could he? We are more precious to him than his own life. The cross trumpets forth this unchanging truth: that Jesus would rather die than lose us as his own.

Wozu dienen TV-Debatten?

Bundespräsident Alexander Van der Bellen will sich auf keine Fernseh-Debatten mit seinen Konkurrenten einlassen, denn „der amtierende Bundespräsident müsse darauf achten, dass das Amt nicht beschädigt werde. Der Sinn von TV-Konfrontationen sei, die eigenen Positionen darzulegen. Diese Gelegenheit müsse man seinen Konkurrenten geben. Doch der Amtsinhaber brauche diese Plattform nicht mehr, weil die Bevölkerung sich bereits ein Bild von ihm habe machen können.“

Ich halte das für eine kluge Entscheidung.

Van der Bellen beschreibt das Ziel solcher Debatten ja sehr diplomatisch, denn in Wirklichkeit geht es dabei ja darum, das eigene Profil zu schärfen, indem man sich öffentlichkeitswirksam und persönlich am Konkurrenten reibt und versucht, ihn „vorzuführen“.  Wenn Van der Bellen (wohl zu Recht) meint, daß er das nicht nötig hat, ist es verständlich, daß er seinen Konkurrenten nicht die Möglichkeit dazu geben will; durch seine Weigerung, den Reibebaum abzugeben,  beschränkt er die Mitbewerber tatsächlich darauf, „die eigenen Positionen darzulegen.“

DAFÜR ist das Militär da!

Meine Frau (sie ist Engländerin) und ich haben heute fast den ganzen Tag vor dem Fernseher verbracht, mit der BBC-Berichterstattung über die Begräbnisfeierlichkeiten für Königin Elizabeth, die verschiedenen Prozessionen mit dem Sarg, und den Begräbnisgottesdienst in der Westminster Abbey. Dort war eine Trauergemeinde von rund zweitausend geladenen  Gästen versammelt, darunter hunderte Staats- und Regierungschefs, und Erzbischof Justin Welby erinnerte sie in seiner Predigt daran, daß die, vor allem auch Führer, die den Menschen dienen, geliebt und in gutem Andenken bewahrt werden, während die, die sich an ihre Macht und Privilegien klammern, bald vergessen sein werden.

Alles endete dann in St. George’s Chapel in Windsor, wo die eigentliche Bestattung stattfand und die Königin neben ihrem Mann, Prinz Philip, begraben wird.

Alles hat wie am Schnürchen geklappt, und ich war sehr beeindruckt von den Menschenmengen: sowohl denen entlang der Prozessionsrouten in London und Windsor, als auch den großen Menschenansammlungen in Städten wie Edinburgh, Manchester, und sogar Christ Church, Neuseeland.

Noch viel beeindruckender war für mich das riesige Aufgebot an Soldaten aus allen Zweigen des britischen Militärs, in ihren bunten Uniformen, mit ihren sorgfältig choreographierten Schritten und Bewegungen, alles im Auftrag von und zu Ehren ihrer verstorbenen Monarchin.

Dann mußte ich daran denken, was andere Soldaten im Auftrag ihrer Führer machen, wie zum Beispiel die russischen Soldaten, die im Auftrag von Vladimir „Schlächter“ Putin unter dem Vorwand einer Bedrohung durch die NATO und „ukrainische Nazis“ ein Nachbarland überfallen haben, und dort seit mehr als sechs Monaten zivile Ziele wie Spitäler und Schulen bombardieren, Zivilisten, einschließlich Kinder, foltern, vergewaltigen, und töten, und die den ganzen Kontinent bedrohen, indem sie immer wieder die Umgebung des größten europäischen Kernkraftwerks bombardieren.

Und auch an die ukrainischen Soldaten mußte ich denken, die ihre Heimat mit unglaublicher Tapferkeit und Einfallsreichtum verteidigen, und ich kam zu folgendem Schluß:

Das beeinduckende Spektakel heute in London und Windsor, sowie die mutige Verteidigung der Ukrainer gegen einen feigen, grausamen und brutalen Aggressor: DAS ist es, wofür Militär recht gebraucht wird. Das, was Schlächter Putin angeordnet hat, eine räuberische und brutale Invasion eines Nachbarlandes, ist ein Mißbrauch des Militärs, und das darf man ihm nicht durchgehen lassen, dafür muß er von der internationalen Gemeinschaft zur Verantwortung gezogen werden.

THIS is, what the military is for!

Today my wife and I spent almost the entire day glued to the BBC’s coverage of Queen Elizabeth’s funeral, the procession from Westminster Hall to Westminster Abbey, the funeral service itself in the Abbey with hundreds of heads of state and other world leaders among the congregation whom Archbishop Justin Welby reminded that those who serve others “will be loved and remembered when those who cling to power and privileges are long forgotten,” then the interminable procession from the Abbey via Buckingham Palace to Wellington Arch  near Hyde Park Corner, and finally by Royal Hearse to Windsor, where the committal service took place in St. George’s Chapel, where the Queen and her late husband Prince Philip will be buried side by side.

The whole thing went off without any mishaps, and I was very impressed by the crowds, both those lining the streets along the procession routes, as well as those gathered in open spaces in Ediburgh, Manchester, and as far away as Christ Church, NZ. Even more impressive were the masses of soldiers and sailors in their colorful uniforms, with their carefully choreographed movements, all to honour their late monarch.

It made me think of what other soldiers are doing at the behest of their leaders, such as those of the Russian army in Ukraine on Vladimir “Butcher” Putin’s orders: attacking a neighbouring country on the pretext of a threat by NATO and “Nazis” in Ukraine’s government, then bombing civilian targets such as schools and hospitals, torturing, raping, and killing civilians including children, and threatening the continent with a major disaster by repeatedly shelling the area around Europe’s largest nuclear power plant.

I thought also of the Ukrainian soldiers defending their country with incredible bravery and ingenuity, and I came to the conclusion:

The impressive spectacle on display in London and Windsor today, and the courageous defense of their country against a vicious and brutal aggressor, is what the military is properly used for. What Putin is doing, ordering an invasion, pillaging, and all sorts of other atrocities, is an improper use, an abuse of the military which he should not get away with but be held accountable by the international community.

Red Mittens for the Queen

A tribute to Queen Elizabeth II on the occasion of her death, by Ian Kleinsasser, Crystal Spring

The following narrative offers a0 plausible explanation of how Queen Elizabeth II of England visited a Manitoba Hutterite community as part of her 1970 Manitoba Centennial Celebration tour.

This story begins in January or February of 1969, approximately one year before Queen Elizabeth II visits Manitoba. On a snowy winter day, a middle-aged Hutterite woman known as Hans-Rebecca[1] from the Rainbow Hutterite community[2] was busy knitting two pairs of red mittens. When people inquired who would receive these mittens, Hans-Rebecca replied: „These are not normal mittens. I am knitting these for Queen Elizabeth II.“
 
True to her word, when Hans-Rebecca finished the mittens, she packaged them up and, just like that, sent them off across the Atlantic Ocean to Buckingham Palace. A month later, an official-looking envelope landed on Hans-Rebecca‘s table. The letter was from one of the Queen‘s ladies-in-waiting and read: 
„Queen Elizabeth normally does not accept personal gifts from people, but this will be an exception.“ 
 
The letter further stated that Queen Elizabeth II would like to visit a Hutterite Community in Manitoba when she travelled to Canada in 1970. The lady-in-waiting thanked Hans-Rebecca for the two pairs of mittens and said that the Queen wanted her to know that she would make great use of them for her children. 
 
So, when Queen Elizabeth II visited Manitoba in 1970, one of the places she requested to see was a Hutterite community in Manitoba. Unfortunately, though Hans-Rebecca may have instigated the Queen‘s visit with her thoughtful gift, she never met Queen Elizabeth. Only young people, Diene (girls) and Buem (boys), went to see the Queen in Milltown.[3]
Hans-Rebecca‘s story offers a plausible account of why Queen Elizabeth II requested a tour of a Hutterite community in Manitoba. The story doesn‘t tell how the visit came about from a political or organizational perspective, i.e., who pulled the political strings to make it happen? A Winnipeg Free Press article, „Brush With History“,  by Kevin Rollason, adds some added clarity. According to Rollason, then Manitoba Premier Edward Schreyer played an essential role in facilitating the visit to the Milltown Hutterite community. At the time, Mr Schreyer was well acquainted with the Hutterites and played a crucial role in ending the Gentleman‘s Agreemen[4]  in Manitoba, which had placed unfair restrictions on Hutterite communities. In the Free Press article, Schreyer shared his perspective:
 
„It [the request to tour a Hutterite community] was unorthodox, but I picked up the phone and called the Milltown Hutterite Colony to see if the Queen could visit a Hutterite colony. The next day [the Hutterite leaders] said yes. The bottom line is she enjoyed it greatly, and on at least two occasions, she said she enjoyed it as a very remarkable visit. And two or three days after the visit, when the Queen and Philip were leaving at the airport, a small group from the colony came to see her off.“
 
Edward Schreyer gives a good description of how the visit came about. At the same time, it captures, in a unique way, the “unorthodox” nature of Queen Elizabeth’s request. Could it be that it was the gift of a pair of red mittens from a year before that now caused Manitoba officials some “unorthodox” angst?”
 
Schreyer’s account does not shed any light on why the Milltown Hutterite community was chosen as the site for the visit. However, a likely factor was its proximity to the railway tracks and station at Elie, Manitoba. When the Queen arrived in Milltown, she was met by crowds of curious young Hutterite women, men, children and members of Milltown and neighbouring Hutterite communities. After touring the Milltown Kleineschul (daycare), church building, and communal dining hall, Queen Elizabeth returned to her vehicle. As the Queen prepared to leave, the young girls from the James Valley Hutterite community near Elie reportedly sang: Should We Meet No More by Daniel O Teasley. Others reported that the congregation sang, God Be with You Till We Meet Again. When two Hutterite men, Josh Hofer and his son Nathanial Hofer, joined the James Valley girls in singing a German song, Prince Philip stepped up beside them and sang along. 
 
When Queen Elizabeth‘s party finally left the Milltown Hutterite community and returned to the Elie train station, many Hutterites followed behind to watch the royal train leave. Queen Elizabeth II stood as the train pulled away from the Elie station and waved a final farewell to the cheering crowd gathered on the Canadian National Railway platform.
 
We may never know whether two pairs of homemade red mittens brought Queen Elizabeth to request a visit to a Manitoba Hutterite community in 1970. What is known about the Queen‘s visit is that she came! Since then, many within the Hutterite community in Canada have cherished her visit. Today, along with thousands of people worldwide, we mourn the passing of a remarkable person, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. God Be with You till We Meet Again!

The Hutterites are an Anabaptist group which originated in the South Tyrol in Austria (now part of Italy) in the early 16th century. Due to religious persecution the group migrated several times, first to Moravia (in today’s Czech Republic) and Upper Hungary (today Slovakia), then to Transsylvania (Romania). There the Hutterites encountered Carinthian Crypto-Protestants who had also fled persecution in Habsburg Carintha and to a large extent adopted their German dialect. From there the Hutterites moved to Walachia (southern Romania) and finally to Ukraine (then part of the Russian Empire). Due to the threat of military conscription most Hutterites migrated to the US between 1874 and 1879. Between the two World Wars the Hutterites left the US due to discrimination because of their pacifist beliefs, and moved to Canada where most of the Hutterites live today.
 
The Hutterites practice community of goods, living together in settlements called colonies. There are three main groups, the Schmiedeleut, the Dariusleut and the Lehrerleut (named after leaders), with several smaller related groups.

It limited both the size and number of Hutterite colonies. It was discriminatory to begin with and eventually became unworkable. In 1970, in the wake of a larger land purchase than was permitted under the Agreement and the ensueing legal wrangling the Manitoba Human Rights Commission declared the Gentleman’s Agreement to be discriminatory and thus invalid.[↩]
